Pella Middle and Jefferson Addition Recognized with AIA Iowa 2025 Design Award

DCI Group is proud to have partnered with Neumann Monson Architects on the Pella Middle and Jefferson Addition, which was recently recognized with a 2025 AIA Iowa Design Award.

This project connects Pella’s intermediate school (grades 4–5) and middle school (grades 7–8) by creating a dedicated home for 6th-grade students. The two-story building takes advantage of a 14-foot grade change, with the main level linking to the intermediate school and the upper level connecting to the middle school. For 11- and 12-year-olds, this is a pivotal year—neither elementary nor fully middle school. The new space gives them a place of their own while supporting a smooth transition between academic environments.

The addition includes ten general education classrooms serving approximately 200 students, a study hall, offices, and a staff lounge. It also houses the school’s band program, featuring a 150-seat band room, ensemble studio, and practice rooms. A grand stair connects the two levels and doubles as a flexible learning commons for collaboration, informal gatherings, and ad hoc instruction.

Durable, high-quality finishes like terrazzo flooring, interior glass, and a slatted wood ceiling enhance both function and wayfinding. The exterior combines pale gray brick, metal panels, and glass, with a dimensional brick pattern on the main level that casts dynamic shadows and adds visual interest throughout the day.

DCI Group is honored to have worked with Neumann Monson Architects and the Pella Community School District to bring this award-winning educational environment to life, creating a thoughtful space that supports learning, growth, and connection.
